Alfa Mist – Withered

Written by on 29th January 2020

The critically acclaimed jazz pianist launches the lead single from his forthcoming solo piano EP, which is due for release on February 28th.

The EP, entitled On My Ones, sees the self-taught jazz virtuoso eschew other instrumentation in order to fully explore the dense intricacies of the piano itself and enable him to demonstrate his own staggering range behind the keys.

Available digitally and as a limited 10″ vinyl, the EP’s lead single “Withered” offers a fascinating snapshot of what to expect from the wider release. Technically, the playing is exemplary but what really draws the listener in are the deft emotional and tonal shifts have become a hallmark of the former grime & hip-hop producer’s style.

Whilst initially melancholic and reflective in tone, underpinned by a mixture of driving chords and mazy melodic runs, the track eventually finds itself closing on a more optimistic note, as it’s dissonant climax fades into obscurity – leaving us hungry for more!

On My Ones is out February 28th on Sekito. You can pre-order it here. Tickets for his performance at the Invisible Wind Factory can be accessed here.
