Daniel Maunick – One Nite Stand
Written by Toby Taylor on 9th October 2019
Taken from his exciting debut solo album Macumba Quebrada, One Nite Stand perfectly encapsulates Daniel Maunick’s dynamic fusion of deep house and Brazilian rhythms.
Maunick certainly has some pedigree as a producer, having produced albums by the likes of Azymuth, Marcos Valle, Terry Callier, Incognito, Ivan ‘Mamao’ Conti and Sabrina Malheiros. Macumba Quebrada builds on these production experiences, as well as Maunick’s own previous releases – most notably his A Vicious Circle and Sombra Do Dragao EPs. Macumba Quebrada is also heavily influenced by the artist’s dual residence in Rio de Janeiro and East London – as perfectly exemplified on “One Nite Stand”.
One can hear the influence of the burgeoning London jazz scene in the track’s squelchy synth arrangement, which is melded with Brazilian rhythms via some deft percussive work. These are by no means the sole influences to be heard on the album however. Across the album a multitude of different sounds from across the black music continuum can be heard, ranging from Detroit techno, Chicago house, London D’n’B and New York disco. That Maunick is able to draw these together so adeptly is testament to his skills as a producer and is what makes the album an exciting prospect!
Macumba Quebrada will be available on 2XLP, CD and digital, from 25th October 2019 via Far Out Recordings.
