DOWD – Poets & Queens

Written by on 20th November 2019

SLT022 is the storming debut EP from ØSCILLATE Co-Founder, DOWD aka Michael Dowding.

Featuring two originals and a Company Is Family remix, the EP is a masterclass in stripped-back, spaced out minimal techno & dubbed out, warm grooves.

The EP kicks off with a deep, progressive opener. “Angelou’s Rising Dub” features punchy 909 kicks, heavy vocal samples and captivating percussion. And if that wasn’t enough to wet the appetite, these are also complimented by lush pads and warm synths as the record rolls through nine minutes fit for the warm up.

Label boss Company Is Family offers his own unique take on “Angelou’s Rising Dub” serving up a menacing interpretation of the original. By distorting the vocals and jiggling the punchy kicks around, the tone shifts to a more intense and grittier sounding techno cut.

The EP’s closer “Queen of Bass” demonstrates DOWD’s varied approach to production, as the he opts for a minimal, up-tempo approach aimed at the darkest part of the night. Spaced out, trippy vocals samples, ascending high hats and alternating drum rhythms come together for this sordid after-hours ensemble.

“Poets & Queens” is out 13 December 2019 on ØSCILLATE RECORDS.
