Lockdown Live Lounge: Lady Blackbird & Charles
Written by katehazeldine on 19th June 2020
Lockdown Live Lounge returns with two more concerts from one home to another! We may still be (2 metres) apart, but now more than ever we need to connect with our online communities to bring us together. We hope to do just that this week, with some more fresh talent from around the globe.
Lockdown Live Lounge invites our favourite artists, local and afar, to live-stream a mini gig from their homes. Every Monday and Thursday at 2pm give your ears and eyes a little hug from the freshest talent across the UK. An intimate experience direct from living room to living room, we invite you to sink into our ‘Lockdown Live Lounge’, but from the comfort of your own home. You don’t even have to get dressed to go out!
This week, we’re delighted to welcome spellbinding US jazz vocalist, Lady Blackbird! She joins us all the way from LA, following the release of her debut single ‘Blackbird‘. Described by Giles Peterson as ‘a singer that blew my mind’, Lady Blackbird and her stirring interpretation of Nina Simone’s powerful civil rights anthem signals the arrival of a revelatory new voice on the global jazz scene.
Whilst reflecting influences as varied as Billie Holiday, Gladys Knight, Tina Turner and Chaka Khan, Lady Blackbird (aka Marley Munroe) possesses a style and emotional intensity that is very much her own. Her forthcoming debut album Black Acid Soul, which was produced by Chris Seefried and features a stellar band including former Miles Davis pianist Deron Johnson, presents a wholly fresh take on the jazz vocal idiom from an artist blessed with a bold, unmistakeable voice.
Following this, it brings us much excitement to host North-London soul singer Charles! After spending the last 2 years writing and homing his craft, we’re eagerly awaiting his debut EP ‘On Trend, Hungry & Broke’ landing later this year.
As previously explored in singles ‘Darker Shade Of Green’ and ‘Red.Green.Gold’, relationships are the cornerstone of Charles’ songwriting. This can be heard in his brand new single ‘Sundance Kid‘ featuring Sharky, who you may recognise from her Lockdown Live Lounge last month. Joined with the unmistakable, rich velvety voice of Charles, the pair are an unstoppable force! Charles explains that Sundance Kid tells the story of a love affair, combined with bad behaviour and a lust for causing trouble. “Playful melodies accompanied with fat bass lines tell the story beautifully. Produced by Mathias Boman, Sundance Kid is an anthem for couples whether that be romantically, or just you and ya best mate frolicking about in summer fucking shit up.” With notes of praise already from the likes of Wonderland, Earmilk, Clash Magazine and Notion, Charles is a surefire one to watch and we cannot wait to see him live.
Join us on our Facebook page for Lady Blackbird on Monday 22nd June, 7pm and for Charles on Thursday 25th June, 2pm.
