Lockdown Live Lounge: Speakeasy Bootleg Band & iamkyami
Written by katehazeldine on 14th August 2020
Lockdown Live Lounge returns with two more concerts from one home to another! We may still be (2 metres) apart, but now more than ever we need to connect with our online communities to bring us together. We hope to do just that this week, with some more fresh talent from around the globe.
Lockdown Live Lounge invites our favourite artists, local and afar, to live-stream a mini gig from their homes. Every Monday and Thursday at 2pm give your ears and eyes a little hug from the freshest talent across the UK. An intimate experience direct from living room to living room, we invite you to sink into our ‘Lockdown Live Lounge’, but from the comfort of your own home. You don’t even have to get dressed to go out!
This week, we’re celebrating all things jazz, and it’s rich history within Liverpool, with The Speakeasy Bootleg Band!
Speakeasy Bootleg Band are a 6-piece Liverpool and NW outfit led by Jeff Lewis, with a regular team of top jazz players. SBB play many regular residencies in the North West, including The Caledonia and Matt & Phreds. Drums, Bass, Guitar, Sax/Clarinet, Trumpet and Trombone deliver high-energy classic jazz from the 1920s to the present day with a bit of Ska, Latin, Rat Pack and loads of clever routines thrown in for good measure! The music of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Louis Jordan, Cab Calloway, Billie Holliday, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey and Count Basie can often be heard in the SBB’s electrifying sets. These are the authentic tunes that drove Tin Pan Alley and created the Great American Songbook. You might spot MDR’s own DJ Jab (Jazz But Not As We Know It) on the kit if you look carefully…
Thursday will see the return of our alternative RnB queen iamkyami!
After an endearing & captivating Live Lounge a couple of months back, we couldn’t resist returning to her humble abode for another dose of sultry neo-soul & hip-hop. Championed by Bido Lito!, LIMF Academy and Culture Deck to name a few, this New Yorker now has her roots firmly planted in Liverpool and a place in our hearts. Be sure to check out her monthly radio show ‘Kickback Culture’ on Melodic Distraction, providing us with the slickest sounds and the most valuable life lessons.
Join us on our Facebook page for The Speakeasy Bootleg Band on Monday 17th August, 2pm and for iamkyami on Thursday 20th August, 2pm.
