MDR Selects – Mai Mai Mai

Written by on 25th February 2020

MDR Selects returns: a series that invites our favourite artists, labels, record stores and more to curate a playlist of songs that hold specific meaning to them. For this edition, we invite Italian occultist drone master Mai Mai Mai to share his selections, ahead of his headline show at The Kazimier Stockroom on Thursday 27th February (with support from our very own Lupini)!

Since childhood, Mai Mai Mai followed his parents around Europe and the Near East, assimilating the different cultures, atmospheres and sonorities of the places he was involuntarily taken to. This project is the transposition of those experiences into music and sounds: a mix of drone and ambient, steamy rhythmics, field recordings and soundscapes.

“When someone asks me to do a playlist or a mixtape, I sometimes think about my personal mood at that moment and try to convey the immediacy of that feeling through the music I select. At other times, I choose tracks and artists I am listening to often and therefore may share the background of a personal experience; how I might spend a nice morning or a cold evening at home. On occasion I might even go for a library music selection, looking back to a lost, distant golden age, in an attempt to introduce people to secret gems and obscurities from the past.

But now I feel like doing something different: I am currently on tour, playing and promoting my last LP (‘Nel Sud’). My favourite part of being on the road is spending time and sharing special moments with some of the other musicians and people I meet; usually by sharing the stage or by enjoying a great live set/a weird performance before having a drink together.

I have recently played and shared the stage with some great people. Looking at my upcoming tour schedule, it looks like I’ll be in good company for the next part of the tour as well. So, here’s a selection of tracks made by people I have played with in the past few weeks or am going to meet in the next few months. A mix of “famous” names, some of whom have influenced my music directly, and some more underground acts who represent some great new discoveries. Enjoy!”
