MDR Selects – Podge

Written by on 19th September 2019

MDR Selects, a series where we invite our favourite artists, record stores, labels and more to curate a playlist of songs that hold specific meaning to them.

This time round, we’re excited to hear what Wirral-based producer Podge has been listening to recently.

Inspired heavily by Japanese pop culture, Podge experiments with synths, polyrhythms and unconventional sounds. With songs that could easily soundtrack a run of Nintendo 64 games, Podge has a truly unique style, where technology is indispensable to the writing process. Fresh from being selected as one of LIMF Academy’s ‘Most Ready Artists’ of 2019/20, his influences are as diverse as the styles fused throughout his tracks, which makes for a truly colourful playlist. Listen below!

“Alright, so this playlist is made up of songs that I’ve been listening to a lot recently and tunes that are super important to me. I included some songs that have inspired my music both recently and in the long term. As of recent I’ve mostly been inspired by JPEGmafia, Sweet Trip, Bruno Pernadas, 100 Gecs and Antonio Carlos Jobim. When I take influence from such a range of artists I have to try and interpolate the different elements into my own style of music. Instead of letting an element of someone else’s music take over my style I try to assimilate these elements into my music. If you wanna hear what kind of music I’ve made so far using all these influences then listen to ‘Such A Steal’ (included in the playlist), it’s a single I self-released this month!”
