Only Now – Captivity
Written by Toby Taylor on 25th September 2019
Following on from a triptych of self-released output in 2019, the latest offering from Only Now (aka Kush Arora) sees the artist taking bold steps in their quest to explore time and space.
Kush Arora has been a crucial figure in championing and exploring the convergence between bass, electronics and roots music in San Francisco – and his latest release reflects the artist’s unique ability at drawing these supposedly disparate sounds together. The launch of his Only Now alias has seen the artist mover in a darker direction.
This has lead to to a sound that, melodically at least, draws from the likes of black metal and the ominous, industrial components of ambient. The results, aided by new hardware – notably the Nord Drum 3P synthesizer – and a collection of field recordings lifted from a trip to Japan, are a dark, twisted record that compellingly demonstrates Arora’s special talent for creating time dilating, mind altering music.
Only Now – Captivity is out October 11th, on Souk Records.
