O’Flynn – Oberyn / Spyglass
Release Date : 23/03/16
Blip Discs return once again with a wonderful new release from O’Flynn.
Despite only having a handful of releases under his belt – O’Flynn has already got an instantly recognisable sound with new release Oberyn beginning in an appreciatively percussive fashion. Off kilter bongo drums are put to work alongside other interesting samples – abrupt breaths and sound bites of tropical birds stand out as the most absorbing of these sounds. The bassline that follows helps to focus and underscore the whole track with the song’s melody complimenting the various percussive instruments used – allowing the instrumentation to become the vocal point of the piece. Lengthy bass tones push through the tribal percussion making Oberyn an extremely powerful track – effective on a dance floor as well as in your headphones.
The B side on this release, Spyglass, takes us on a much calmer journey. A hazy sample mentions ‘electricity,’ but Spyglass has a thoughtful ambience throughout oozing with warmth, the extended piano chords create a gorgeous atmosphere that is combined with a sporadic, almost off the cuff, saxophone breakdown in the middle of the song. The simple vocal samples on Spyglass give the track a soothing feel, with a nice ebb and flow and as the song draws to a close it fades out with a simple melody.
BLIP 003 shows that O’Flynn and Blip Discs have continued with the forging of their own sound and rightly so. Each Blip Discs release has been great so far and O’Flynn will surely be a producer to watch in 2016 and the future.
