Test Match Special with Richie Vegas (September ’17)

Written by on 12th October 2017

Richie Vegas cut his DJing teeth in his late teens – messing about with hip hop and breaks – before plundering his family’s record collections and forging a sound that includes soul, funk, jazz, afrobeat and reggae.

An integral member of the Jiggery Pokery collective (2000-2003 RIP) – running eclectic hip hop nights in Liverpool and beyond – Rich’s distinctive style has found him playing countless gigs over the intervening 15 years: holding residences at some of the finest bars and clubs (Mellowtone, The Merchant, Shipping Forecast, Magnet), playing festivals, galleries and shindigs (Africa Oye, Tate Liverpool, Positive Vibrations) and supporting visiting dignitaries (Lee Scratch Perry, Hot 8 Brass Band, Don Letts, Seun Kuti and Egypt 80).

He is one part of Beaten Tracks – a Liverpool-based collective of DJs and Artists who champion the rare, the dusty and the forgotten; and now also mixes up Dub and Reggae alongside his former University tutor, Dr Keith Marley, as Vegas & Marley. Test Match Special is the product of all this and more – an opportunity to showcase a selection of tunes that doesn’t quite fit with live DJ sets, explore less-travelled paths and distill 20 years of musical musings. Expect lost monsters, obscure reworkings, stubborn earworms and wickets galore…
