Wide Open with Roger Conga, Ranga & Harambe (September ’17)
Written by Tom Lye on 9th October 2017
We welcome the Wide Open crew to the Melodic Distraction airwaves for their first show! What a belter it was too, with Brazilica’s Roger Congo swinging for a taster of what the Brazilica Festival is all about. Ahead of his set at Huma, the following week, Ranga also enlisted his group to join us in the studio for a live jam. Get involved!
Roger’s modern Brazilian & Cuban records have been collected across the globe during his curation of the UK’s biggest Brazilian carnival, Brazilica. Roger comes on the airwaves to play us a set reminiscent of his sellout Latino/Festival nights held in the now demolished Cream nightclub. Roger’s Brazilica 2017 Carnival Parade Liverpool Samba is a Liverpool tradition, running all through town from the 14th to the 16th of July. His Samba School boasts being the first Gringo partakers in the Rio carnival of all time.
After supporting Yussef Kamaal in 2016, Ranga & Harambe (saxophone) have extended the lineup to include a fender Rhodes player (Paddy) and have gone on to further their own projects. Vinyl samples triggered via an MPC and are extended via delays, springs & crushers to curate a Dub-Hop-Jazz soundscape for Paddy and Harambe’s forward thinking Jazz collaborations. Harambe has gone on to form his own live band project, including a few reimagined versions of Ranga & Harambe’s debut tunes.
Wide Open have a few more parties lined up this year with their Afr0-Disco taking over the Shipping Forecast in a few weeks.
